Stony Brook University researchers are gearing up to measure the universe using the newly built Vera C. Rubin Observatory. The observatory, a collaboration between the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of Energy (DOE), is located on El Peñón peak of Cerro Pachón in Chile’s Andes Mountains.

Today, at an event in Washington D.C., the observatory unveiled its first set of large, ultra-high-definition images and videos. These visuals demonstrate Rubin’s advanced capabilities to a global audience for the first time.

Stony Brook professors, post-doctoral researchers, graduate students, and undergraduates from the University’s Department of Physics and Astronomy joined their international colleagues by hosting a “First Look Watch Party” to celebrate this milestone.
