The William Floyd Board of Education recently conducted its annual reorganization meeting for the 2025-26 school year. During this meeting, newly re-elected trustees April Coppola, Lorraine Mentz, and Luis J. Soto took the oath of office to begin their new three-year terms.

The board appointed its officers for the upcoming school year: April Coppola as President, Robert Taiani as Vice President, Kevin Coster as Superintendent of Schools, Carolyn Visintin as District Clerk, Michelle Romanosky as District Treasurer, and Mary Sidaras as Deputy District Treasurer.

A significant development at this year’s meeting was the appointment of student members to the Board of Education. This move aligns with a new law requiring all school districts with high schools to include at least one non-voting student member on their boards. The initiative aims to provide a student perspective on key issues and help students develop leadership and civic engagement skills. Nasyah Crosby, Muhammad Saad, and Andrew Winter were appointed as the inaugural student board members.

Additionally, the board adopted its meeting schedule for the 2025-2026 academic year. Meetings will be held at William Floyd High School’s Jeananne Dawson Memorial Library in Mastic Beach. Public sessions are scheduled to start at 7 pm unless otherwise noted.

The meeting dates for the 2025-26 school year are August 26 (6 pm public session), September 16, October 7 & 28, November 18, December 16, January 13, February 10 (Budget Advisory meeting at 6:30 pm/BOE meeting at 7 pm), March 10 & 24 (Budget Advisory meeting at 6:30 pm/BOE meeting at 7 pm), April 21 (Budget Advisory meeting at 6:30 pm/BOE meeting at 7 pm), May 12 (Budget Advisory meeting at 6:30 pm/BOE meeting at 7 pm), and June 16. The annual Budget Vote and Trustee Election is set for May 19, 2026.
