The William Floyd High School boys’ varsity track team has won the League I winter track championship, led by head coach Ed Noll. The victory was described by Coach Noll as a “total team effort,” with contributions from all athletes.
The championship meet was one of the closest in league history. Heading into the final event, William Floyd trailed by 5.5 points and needed at least a third-place finish in the 4x800m relay to win. The team secured third place in that event, earning enough points for a half-point overall victory.
Distance runners Vidal Macchia, Holden Lentini, and Duncan Mahnken were among those who scored key points for the Colonials. Macchia finished third in the two mile and fourth in the 1000m, while Lentini and Mahnken placed second and fourth in the 1600m, respectively. Sprinter Zavier Jenkins took second place in both the 300m and 55m events.
Christian Hobson contributed with a fourth-place finish in the 55m, second place in both long jump and high jump. Temarr Burwell and Isaiah Taylor also scored points in high jump events. The Colonials earned points across all three relays during the meet.
“Winter track is an absolute grind being outside training in the elements and toughing it out through those cold days,” said Coach Noll. “The boys remain focused and steadfast throughout the season to do what needed to be done, to work hard and earn the title as league champions.”
William Floyd will continue its season with county championships and state meet qualifiers scheduled for upcoming weeks.
