The William Floyd boys’ varsity wrestling team has secured its first League I championship in more than four decades, following an 81-0 victory over Riverhead. This win brought their league record to 4-1 and marked the program’s first title since 1983. Under the leadership of head coach Tony Mecca, the Colonials also recorded wins against Longwood, Central Islip, and previously undefeated Brentwood.
In addition to their league success, the team performed strongly in several tournaments. At the 19th annual Takedown Autism Tournament, which they hosted, William Floyd finished second as a team. The tournament included victories over Bay Shore, Islip—ranked fifth in Suffolk County at the time—and reigning county champions John Glenn. The event also raised $1,500 for Rise Life Services, a local nonprofit supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The Colonials continued their run with another second-place finish at the David C. Bloom Memorial Duals after defeating Roslyn, Baldwin, Seaford, and Kellenberg. In the Joe Davidson Memorial Tournament, six wrestlers placed in the top five of their weight classes; Caleb Holmes (132 lbs) and David Gonzalez (190 lbs) were overall champions.
Senior Josiah Lors reached a personal milestone by becoming only the eighth wrestler in program history to achieve 100 career wins during the Bob Bury Duals. He was recognized as a Newsday top 100 boys’ wrestler for the 2025-26 season along with teammates David Gonzalez and Jack Meyer—the latter also achieving his 100th career win.
Three student-athletes from William Floyd were invited to compete at the prestigious Eastern States Classic in Albany: David Gonzalez and Josiah Lors from the boys’ team and Veronica-Sky Williams from the girls’ team. Veronica finished third in her division; Josiah took fourth place with a 5-2 record; David won two matches during the tournament.
At the 40th annual Kujan Brothers’ Memorial Tournament hosted by William Floyd, three athletes—Jordan Glover (110 lbs), Jack Meyer (138 lbs), and David Gonzalez (190 lbs)—were named overall champions. The event honors former William Floyd wrestlers Kevin and Steve Kujan.
The team also organized an intradistrict kids’ wrestling tournament involving students from all five district elementary schools. Sixty-six students competed across sixteen weight classes after six weeks of preparation. Tangier Smith Elementary earned first place overall.
Head coach Tony Mecca praised his athletes for their efforts throughout these competitions as they continue into the remainder of their season.
