William Floyd Middle School announced on Apr. 17 that its Student Ambassador Program is helping new students adjust to their school environment by providing peer support and leadership opportunities.

The program aims to ease the transition for students entering a new school or grade level, which can often be stressful. The initiative highlights the school’s efforts to create a supportive and welcoming atmosphere for all students.

The Student Ambassador Program involves middle school student leaders who act as a welcoming committee for newcomers. Ambassadors guide new students around the building, accompany them to classes on their first day, lead tours for incoming fifth graders each spring, and assist during orientation and other events throughout the year. Taylor Connor, a William Floyd Middle School counselor who has advised the ambassadors for six years, said: “Transitioning to a new school can be overwhelming. Our Student Ambassadors help ease that transition by offering a warm welcome and peer support. Their leadership plays an important role in building a caring and connected school community.”

Students interested in becoming ambassadors must submit an application or receive a teacher nomination, maintain at least an 85 grade point average, demonstrate good behavior, and consistently show respectfulness, responsibility, and readiness to learn as part of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports standards. Eligible participants complete training focused on leadership skills and supporting peers.

Throughout the year, ambassadors meet regularly to prepare for major events such as fifth-grade visits while developing their ability to assist fellow students meaningfully. As more students join each year, William Floyd Middle School reports that its environment has become increasingly welcoming.

The William Floyd School District operates ten schools serving more than 9,400 kindergarten through twelfth-grade students according to its official website. The district has received recognition for its music program among top communities for music education as well as accolades from the Business Teachers Association of New York State according to district information. Alumni have been recognized for contributions in scholarships, educational leadership and community service as reported by the official website.

The district also fosters collaboration among students, parents, educators and staff with an emphasis on supporting intellectual, emotional and physical development within a positive setting according to district sources.
