William Floyd Middle School (WFMS) has received a $12,500 grant from the Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation Sports Matter Program. The funding will be used to enhance the school’s physical education department and athletic teams by transforming the auxiliary gymnasium into a recreational space that promotes student wellness and engagement.

Representatives from the Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation attended the William Floyd Board of Education meeting on January 13 to present the grant award to WFMS. The funds will be allocated for age-appropriate recreational and fitness equipment, benefiting both athletic teams and students during the school day. The upgraded gym will serve as a space for physical activity, stress relief, and social interaction.

In addition to regular use, access to the new gym space will be used as an incentive for students who demonstrate positive behavior, good attendance, and academic effort. These students will have extra opportunities to use the facility during lunch periods. There are also plans for students to access the gym equipment beyond normal school hours.

“Our aim is to promote physical health, mental well-being, positive decision making and student engagement, ensuring all students have access to opportunities that support their growth both inside and outside the classroom,” said WFMS principal Camelle Person. Mrs. Person also extended her gratitude to the Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation for their generosity and to teacher Kristen Alvy for her efforts in introducing the grant and orchestrating the application process.

The Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation is a non-profit organization focused on increasing youth sports participation through its Sports Matter Program, which was established in 2014.
