William Floyd High School senior Jack Meyer has set a new school record for most wrestling wins, reaching 146 victories at the Division I Dual Championships at East Islip High School on January 21. This achievement surpassed the previous record of 145 wins held by John Barone for 21 years. Meyer continued to extend his record with three additional wins during Senior Night, bringing his total to 149 as he prepares for postseason competition.

Meyer is a three-year captain and six-year varsity member in the 138 lb. weight class. He was recognized as a pre-season top 100 wrestler in Suffolk County by Newsday and reached his 100th win during his junior year, which is uncommon for students at that level. His performance this season contributed to William Floyd’s League I championship, marking the program’s first title in over forty years.

Tony Mecca, longtime coach of the boys’ varsity wrestling team, said: “I have had the pleasure of coaching Jack for most of his life, starting with the ‘Floyd Boyz Wrestling Club’ (kids’ program) and all the way through varsity. I’ve seen him grow from a boy to a young man. We’ve had some special people come through this program but Jack ranks right at the top. He can achieve anything he sets his mind to. I believe the win record was in his sights when we brought him up in seventh grade. He is everything we want to represent our program.”

During his high school career, Meyer has been a three-year varsity captain, two-time All-County student-athlete, two-time Newsday top 100 selection, five-time All-League honoree, two-time league finalist, and recipient of the Spartan Award as League I’s most outstanding wrestler as a junior.

In addition to wrestling, Meyer plays on the varsity soccer team where he serves as captain and has been named a Newsday top 100 selection and two-time All-League athlete. He also played football for William Floyd’s varsity Division I champion team as placekicker and punter.

Academically, Meyer is involved in several extracurricular activities including National Honor Society, Tri-M Honor Society, Student Government, Yearbook Club and Brass Quintet as a trumpet player. He has earned SCMEA All-County honors four times and was selected once as an NYSBDA All-State member.

He participates in advanced placement classes while enrolled in Personal Training & Nutrition within William Floyd’s Career and Technical Education programs and maintains honor roll status throughout high school. Additionally, Meyer volunteers with youth sports programs mentoring children in wrestling, soccer and lacrosse.

Meyer attended William Floyd schools from kindergarten through high school graduation.
