The Suffolk County Police Department will be joining law enforcement agencies across the state during the annual “Buckle Up New York, Click it or Ticket” campaign—an effort to highlight the importance of seatbelt use.
SCPD patrol and highway officers will focus on high visibility and zero tolerance when it comes to seat belt enforcement between May 23 and June 5. New York State law requires all motor vehicle passengers ages 8 and older to wear seat belts, regardless of seating position. Children under the age of 4 must ride in a car seat and children under the age of 2 must ride in a rear-facing car seat.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2020, 10,893 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants were killed in crashes in the United States. Among the young adults (18 to 34) killed, more than half (60%) were completely unrestrained — one of the highest percentages for all age groups.
