WASHINGTON, D.C. - Rep. Nick LaLota (R-Suffolk County) emphasized the necessity of restoring the SALT deduction and addressing double taxation during a Small Business Committee hearing on the adverse impacts of high taxes and the intricate tax code.

LaLota expressed his dedication to assisting Long Islanders financially by stating, “While Albany Democrats must do more to repeal unfunded mandates and lower New Yorkers’ taxes, my constituents know better than to rely on them to make our lives easier. In Washington, I am working on raising the SALT deduction cap to help Long Islanders make ends meet.”

Furthermore, LaLota urged bipartisan support for legislation to eliminate the SALT deduction cap marriage penalty, asserting, “Many of my colleagues, regardless of their party affiliation, claim to support families, lowering the cost of living, and improving the lives of the average American. If that’s the case, every single one of them should support common sense legislation to eliminate the un-American SALT deduction cap marriage penalty. I will always fight to ensure the federal government is working for Long Island families.”

In recent months, LaLota's efforts included voting against the Wyden-Smith tax bill for its failure to increase the SALT deduction cap and leading the charge to repeal the SALT marriage penalty with the SALT Marriage Penalty Elimination Act. Despite facing obstacles, including opposition from House Democrats and some Conservatives, LaLota remains steadfast in his support for restoring the SALT deduction.

Since taking office in January 2023, LaLota has actively advocated for the restoration of the SALT deduction. He joined the bipartisan SALT Caucus and introduced the SALT Fairness and Deficit Reduction Act to enhance the deduction for the majority of taxpayers while reducing the federal deficit.

The hearing shed light on the ongoing dialogue surrounding tax policies and the impact they have on individuals and businesses, with LaLota's stance emphasizing the importance of addressing the SALT deduction and double taxation to alleviate financial burdens on constituents.
