Assemblyman Joe DeStefano expressed his dismay at the ongoing delay in distributing funds intended for veterans, criticizing the Department of Veteran Services and the governor for withholding these much-needed resources. DeStefano, along with other lawmakers, held a press conference at the state Capitol to address the issue.
"These funds have been at a standstill for six years now, yet to be disbursed. It’s truly disgraceful that those who have sacrificed so much for our nation are being denied the support they rightfully deserve," DeStefano stated. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that many veterans and their families are facing financial struggles and are in dire need of assistance.
DeStefano also questioned the government's priorities, asking, "What kind of message are we sending to veterans when our administration is basically telling them this isn’t a top priority for us?" He highlighted the sacrifices made by veterans in defense of the country's freedoms and condemned any compromise of their well-being for political reasons.
In addition, DeStefano raised concerns about the unequal funding allocation compared to neighboring states, stating, "New York has three times the number of veterans as New Jersey, but we only get half the amount of funding as New Jersey." He called for immediate action to rectify this disparity and ensure that New York veterans receive the support they deserve.
The bipartisan event underscored the collective effort to advocate for veterans' rights and urged the governor to release the $3.5 million donated by New Yorkers for the benefit of veterans and their families. The lawmakers emphasized the importance of honoring the contributions and sacrifices of those who have served the nation and called for a swift resolution to the funding issue.
