Local teacher honored as "Secondary Social Studies Teacher of the Year

Mr. Andrew Budris, a social studies instructor at Bellport High School in the South Country School District, has been recognized as the "2023-2024 Secondary Social Studies Teacher of the Year" by the National Council for the Social Studies. The National Council for the Social Studies is a professional association dedicated to social studies education.

In honor of this recognition, NYS Senator Dean Murray introduced a resolution that was unanimously adopted by the New York State Senate. Senator Murray and South Country School District Superintendent Antonio Santana recently visited Mr. Budris in his classroom at Bellport High School, where Senator Murray surprised him with the Senate Resolution honoring his accomplishment.

Mr. Budris has been an educator at Bellport High School for over 25 years. He teaches social studies and advanced placement courses and serves as the lead teacher in the Social Studies Department. Mr. Budris is described as a highly skilled, knowledgeable, and dedicated teacher who has improved the quality of education at the high school by leading and supporting staff with enthusiasm and cultivating a positive environment for students and the community.

“Andrew Budris is exactly the type of teacher we want educating our children. He is an outstanding academic who brings pride, energy, and excitement to the classroom and to the South Country School District. Congratulations, Mr. Budris!” said NYS Senator Dean Murray from the 3rd Senate District.
