Councilman Michael Loguerico and Supervisor Dan Panico participated in the annual Northern Bobwhite Quail release at the Town of Brookhaven's Longwood Estate in Ridge. The event took place on August 1.
According to a Town of Brookhaven news release, Brookhaven and the Center for Environmental Education and Discovery (CEED) sponsor the annual quail release to help control the tick population. The program specifically targets the deer tick, which is a carrier of Lyme disease.
CEED collaborated with the town to raise the birds for release into the wild. Northern Bobwhite Quail were once abundant on Long Island. More information about CEED and their release programs can be found at www.ceedli.org.
Brookhaven's Department of Recycling and Sustainable Materials Management administers the annual quail release. Further details about the town's environmental initiatives are available at www.BrookhavenNY.gov or by calling 631-451-TOWN (8696).
