William Floyd High School Business Academy chairperson Ms. Jacqueline Giacalone was recently featured on “Spotlight on LI Schools,” the weekly LI News Radio program highlighting notable developments in Long Island’s schools. Ms. Giacalone discussed the various opportunities available to students at William Floyd High School's Business Academy, aimed at aiding their post-graduation journeys and lifelong endeavors.
The program, sponsored by the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association (N-SSBA), features host Robert Vecchio, executive director of N-SSBA and former William Floyd Board of Education trustee and president. During the interview, Ms. Giacalone and Mr. Vecchio explored the Business Academy’s offerings designed to meet elective requirements while developing college- and career-related skills beneficial for students' futures.
During the interview, Mr. Vecchio asked for advice for parents as their children enter freshman and sophomore years at William Floyd.
Ms. Giacalone responded: “Start with Personal Finance - that is the most important class,” adding that she often hears parents wish their children had learned effective money management earlier. Personal Finance covers topics such as balancing a checkbook, writing checks, savings accounts, insurance, investing, and more.
Other courses offered by William Floyd High School Business Academy include College & Career Prep, Accounting, College Accounting, Business of Music, Business Ownership & Management, College Business Law, College Business Math, Entertainment Marketing, Everyday Law, Fashion Marketing, International Business (English & Spanish), Leadership by Design, Math Applications, The Office (a course title), Real Estate Reality (a course title), Social Media (a course title), Sports Marketing (a course title), Video Game Design (a course title), Virtual Enterprise (a course title), Wall Street (a course title), Wealth Management (a course title), and Web Design.
College credit is available for numerous courses within three graduation pathways in the Business Academy: Accounting; Small Business Management; and Microsoft Office Specialist.
