Stony Brook University is calling on its students to participate in the annual Car Free Day Long Island on Sunday, September 22. The Stony Brook University Office of Sustainability is encouraging students to forego their cars in favor of trains, buses, bicycles, carpools, or walking for the day.

Since 2013, Stony Brook University has been involved in Car Free Day Long Island, with more than 500 participants each year. Currently, the university leads with 854 pledges and aims to reach a total of 1,000.

Participants who pledge will be entered into a drawing for various prizes. These include a Giant Escape 3 bike, Liv Alight 3 bike, a 10-trip All-Access Long Island Pass from the LIRR, and an annual Bike Share membership.

The initiative seeks to highlight the environmental benefits of alternative transportation methods and propel Stony Brook University to the top of this year's pledge chart. More information about Car Free Day Long Island can be found on their website or by contacting the Office of Sustainability.

Students are encouraged to join the SBU community and embrace car-free transportation on September 22.
