Stony Brook University held a ceremony on November 7 to honor eight faculty members who have been appointed as SUNY Distinguished Professors in 2024. The event took place at the Sunwood Estate and acknowledged these individuals for their significant contributions to research, teaching, and service.
Interim President Richard McCormick commended the honorees for their work across various fields, including neurology, physics, mental health, and climate science. He stated, “To our new distinguished faculty, you are solving some of the world’s most challenging problems and complex questions in neurological disease, climate change, mental health, STEM, our understanding of the cosmos, the inner workings of the human body, and more.” He also emphasized their role in inspiring future generations.
McCormick highlighted that these professors serve as role models for students at Stony Brook. “Your presence here at Stony Brook enables you to provide an example for young scholars from all over the country and all over the world, from disadvantaged communities and wildly different backgrounds,” he said. “You are living proof that here, knowledge matters. You are paving the path forward for Stony Brook and for the world.”
The faculty members were recognized by the SUNY Board of Trustees as Distinguished Professors. This title is one of the highest academic honors within the SUNY system and is awarded to those with national or international recognition who have made significant contributions to research or scholarship. The Distinguished Teaching Professorship acknowledges exceptional teaching and mentorship.
