Stony Brook University has unveiled a new seven-foot-tall statue of its mascot, Wolfie, on the Academic Mall. The event took place on September 26 and was attended by Interim President Richard McCormick, the Spirit of Stony Brook Band, and Wolfie himself.
The bronze sculpture, created by artist Virgil Oertle, depicts Wolfie standing behind a bench. It is intended as a meeting place for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the broader Seawolf community. The project was funded by alumnus Ken Marcus '71.
Interim President Richard McCormick expressed excitement about presenting the statue to the community. "Wolfie spans many generations of Seawolves, connecting us all through his spirit and tenacity," McCormick said. "He is authentic, confident, inspiring and a supportive friend, reflecting the best of who we are as a community, and as individuals."
Interim Vice President for Advancement Scott Barrett highlighted the joy associated with the gift. "The very best gifts are remembered by the joy that people feel upon receiving them," Barrett said. "By that measure, today celebrates a great gift to our campus — a gift that has the potential to create lots of joy for many people in the coming years. This statue embodies a phrase that is meaningful to Ken, and I hope to all of you as you pass by this spot, as you graduate, and as you journey through your careers and your lives: ‘Once a Seawolf, always a Seawolf!'"
Other speakers at the event included USG President Nistha Boghra and Vice President of Student Affairs Rick Gatteau.
