Stony Brook, NY — On September 26, 2024, Interim President Richard L. McCormick addressed the Stony Brook University community in his inaugural State of the University speech. Speaking to a diverse audience of faculty, staff, students, and local residents, Dr. McCormick shared his appreciation for the warm welcome he received upon joining the university.
Reflecting on his background, McCormick spoke about his early years spent near Rutgers University where his father taught history. He also highlighted his own tenure as both a faculty member and later president at Rutgers. During the address, he emphasized the connection between Stony Brook's growth and significant trends in American higher education.
Dr. McCormick reported a historic increase in first-year student enrollment this fall. "Their presence testifies to our university’s reputation as a top choice for talented, diverse, and ambitious students from all backgrounds across New York State, the nation, and the world," he said. He noted that over 40% of undergraduates receive federal Pell grants and graduate at rates comparable to their peers.
The interim president celebrated a record fundraising year for Stony Brook University with $655 million raised—$563 million allocated directly to its endowment. He paid tribute to Dr. James Simons who passed away recently; both Dr. Simons and his wife had been longstanding supporters of the institution.
In healthcare contributions by Stony Brook Medicine were recognized for serving Long Island's community health needs through various programs including those at its hospitals and numerous ambulatory care facilities. Notably, Stony Brook University Hospital was among eight U.S hospitals achieving Health Care Equity Certification from The Joint Commission—a first on Long Island—underscoring its commitment to diversity and equitable patient care.
Despite successes highlighted during his speech Dr.McCormick acknowledged ongoing challenges facing the institution while encouraging collective efforts toward elevating it further: “Let’s take our university to next level,” urging collaboration towards becoming "a true flagship."
