Suffolk County Community College has renamed its nursing school to honor Jane F. Shearer, a former associate dean and president of the Guild of Administrative Officers at the college. Jane F. Shearer, who passed away from cancer in 2019, was recognized for her more than 30 years of service and dedication to the institution.

The decision to rename the school follows a scholarship endowment by Shearer's family, intended to support nursing students indefinitely. The family expressed their wish to further commemorate her legacy by establishing the Jane F. Shearer School of Nursing.

“Naming an academic program or campus space for an individual or an organization is a meaningful way to signify a valued connection between the namesake and the college,” stated Dr. Edward Bonahue, President of Suffolk County Community College. He emphasized that “Jane’s passion for education and her unwavering support for our students will continue to inspire future generations of nursing leaders.”

John Vidovich, Jane’s brother, noted, “Suffolk meant so much to Jane, and Jane meant so much to so many people.” He added that this gesture would perpetuate her legacy and benefit future nursing students.

A luncheon was recently held by the college's Foundation in Smithtown to mark this occasion. Proceeds from this event are aimed at reducing costs associated with the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX) for aspiring registered nurses (RNs) or licensed practical nurses (LPNs). Many students at Suffolk County Community College face financial challenges in paying tuition fees alongside this exam cost.

Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine praised the family's contribution: "Jane's family has made a remarkable gift that will ensure the quality of healthcare being delivered across Suffolk County will always be of the highest quality."

The college remains committed to providing comprehensive educational programs as part of its mission within the State University of New York system.
