Islip Terrace man receives 25-year sentence for manslaughter

Eduardo Vega, a 58-year-old resident of Islip Terrace, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the manslaughter of his son-in-law, Roshane McLaren. The sentencing follows Vega's guilty plea in September 2024 to first-degree manslaughter after he fatally stabbed McLaren in their shared driveway.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney stated, “There is absolutely no justification for this defendant’s violent actions. The brutal manner in which he chose to attack and kill Mr. McLaren deserves an equally serious prison sentence.”

The incident occurred on September 27, 2022, when a verbal altercation between Vega and one of his daughters' husbands escalated violently. During the confrontation, Vega threw a lawn chair and threatened with a baseball bat before physically assaulting one of his daughters who tried to intervene. After leaving the scene briefly, Vega returned with his wife, Tanya Denis, whereupon another confrontation led to him stabbing McLaren twice in the chest.

Following the stabbing, Denis assisted Vega by providing money and driving him to a train station from where he fled to Brooklyn. McLaren was taken to South Shore University Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Vega surrendered himself to authorities at the Suffolk County Police Department’s Third Precinct on October 2, 2022. He pleaded guilty before Acting County Court Judge Richard T. Dunne and received his sentence on October 16, 2024. Christopher Gioe represented him legally.

Denis also faced charges related to the incident; she pleaded guilty on September 4, 2024, to hindering prosecution in the third degree and was represented by Ian Fitzgerald.
