Stony Brook University marked the start of the holiday season with its annual Light the Brook event on November 4. This seventh edition transformed the Academic Mall with lights adorning trees and poles, celebrating student achievements. The Undergraduate Student Government organized the event, which was co-sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs and SBU Eats.
The gathering featured several student and university leaders who addressed attendees. Activities commenced at the Administration fountain, offering guest speakers, club displays, interactive activities, and performances by Music in Medicine, the Pipettes, and SBU Flow. Participants enjoyed giveaways, crafts, hot chocolate, and desserts.
At 5:15 pm, a countdown led to the illumination of the Academic Mall. Rick Gatteau, Vice President for Student Affairs, reminisced about the event's humble beginnings seven years ago. "Who’s excited for the seventh annual Light the Brook?" he asked. He recalled how it started with students stringing lights over a tree near Psych A building after buying them from Home Depot. "Now, seven years later, look at this amazing crowd — it’s just gotten bigger and better every year."
Gatteau emphasized the community spirit: “This is so important for our community at Stony Brook,” he said. “It speaks to the joy, love, and care we have for each other.”
SBU Interim President Richard McCormick expressed pride in witnessing his first Light the Brook celebration. “This is my first Light the Brook," he noted as he admired the lights decorating campus grounds. "I’m really proud of you and proud of our university — Light the Brook!”
