The William Floyd Colonials varsity football team, guided by head coach Paul Longo, has finished its regular season with a significant 42-30 victory over Connetquot. This win brings the team's record to 7-1 and secures the Division I championship for the 16th time in the program's history. It also marks the 25th consecutive year that the Colonials have qualified for the playoffs. The team is now aiming for their 15th Suffolk County Championship.
As the top-seeded team, the Colonials will host No. 8 Sachem East in a quarterfinal playoff game on Saturday, November 9 at noon. Tickets are not required for this round of playoffs; however, identification will be necessary for attendance due to ongoing procedures from homecoming events.
Securing the division title allows William Floyd to host two playoff games on their path to Stony Brook and potentially another Suffolk County Championship. Earlier this season, they defeated Sachem East with a score of 48-20. Throughout the season, they averaged nearly 39 points per game and outscored opponents by a margin of 311-174.
In their recent game against Connetquot, A.J. Cannet contributed significantly with 197 passing yards and two touchdowns, along with rushing twice for three yards and an additional touchdown. Josh Jordan and Geo Alvarez were on the receiving end of those touchdown passes. Ja’Quan Thomas led the ground game with an impressive 241 yards and three scores, supported by strong offensive line play.
Defensively, Aisays Wallace stood out with 12 tackles (one for loss) and two batted passes. Aaron Fisher added six tackles (one for loss), along with a sack, while Jake Rivera recorded six tackles (two for loss) and a sack.
With their sights set on another county title, head coach Paul Longo expressed optimism about his team’s prospects as they prepare for upcoming challenges in the playoffs.
