Stony Brook University will observe International Education Week (IEW) from November 18 to 22. The event is organized by the Office of Global Affairs and aims to enhance global awareness and cultural exchange among students, faculty, and staff through various programs, workshops, and creative displays.
IEW is part of a broader initiative led by the U.S. Departments of State and Education. Celebrated in over 100 countries, it seeks to promote international understanding and educational exchange. The program began in 2000 to emphasize the importance of cross-border connections for building inclusive and globally minded communities.
Trista Lu, assistant director of International Student Success at Stony Brook, noted, “This year, we have a lot of exciting things going on during International Education Week and for our nearly 3,500 international students at Stony Brook.” She highlighted the opening of an international student center as a new space for students to study or gather.
The center is located in Melville Library Room S1450 and serves as a meeting place for international students. It features projects like the “Seasons of Stony Brook Tree,” which changes themes each season to present cultural stories and perspectives. In October, it focused on “Fear and Courage,” encouraging students to share experiences of resilience through decorated ornaments.
As part of IEW activities, “Cooking From Home: Zimbabwe” will take place on November 19. Traditional Zimbabwean dishes will be served at East Side and West Side Dine-In locations, providing participants with an opportunity to enjoy international cuisine during the week.
