At the recent Town Board meeting held on November 19, Supervisor Dan Panico and the Town Council recognized the winners of the Brookhaven Recycles Poster Contest. This inaugural contest, open to all K-12 students in Brookhaven Town, attracted over 300 submissions. The posters focused on themes such as "Recycle Every Day!" and "Stop Litter!" Winners were selected from five different grade level categories: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12, and Special Education.
Supervisor Panico emphasized the importance of youth involvement in environmental issues by stating, “This generation that’s going to break in their efforts, their understanding about litter, about recycling, about proper waste management. That’s going to make the difference in this town, on this island and in this country when it comes to making our environment cleaner and doing the right thing by earth.”
The event included several notable attendees who joined Supervisor Panico for a photo with the winners. These included Town Clerk Kevin LaValle; Councilman Neil Manzella; Councilwoman Jane Bonner; Recycling and Sustainable Materials Management Commissioner Christine Fetten; Councilman Michael Loguercio; Councilman Neil Foley; and Councilmember Jonathan Kornreich.
The winners announced by the Town Council members were:
For grades K-2:
1st Place: Austin Callegari from South Street School (Grade 2)
Runner-up: Adrian Uzcategui from South Street School (Grade 1)
For grades 3-5:
1st Place: Michelle Wardhana from Edna Louise Spear Elementary (Grade 4)
Runner-up: Logan Fernandes from New Lane Elementary (Grade 4)
For grades 6-8:
1st Place: Angeles Villa from Oregon Middle School (Grade 8)
Runner-up: Zikriya Kazmi from Selden Middle School (Grade 7)
For grades 9-12:
1st Place: Alex Alleyne from Patchogue-Medford High School (Grade 11)
Runner-up: Fabiana Roca from Patchogue-Medford High School (Grade 11)
In the Special Education category:
1st Place: LeeAndrea Williams-Campbell from Patchogue-Medford High School (Grade 12)
Runner-up: Jeremy Pelaez from William Floyd Learning Center (Grade 5)
