Assemblyman Joe DeStefano announced that Governor Hochul has signed an amendment to the 2019 "Gio's Law" (A.7961). This amendment allows counties in New York, except for New York City, to enact local laws enabling law enforcement officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel to carry and use EpiPens during emergencies.

The legislation ensures that counties with populations over one million, such as Nassau and Suffolk counties, can equip first responders with EpiPens to address anaphylactic emergencies. It builds on existing law by removing ambiguity and ensuring life-saving treatments are available when needed.

Suffolk County Legislator Dominick Thorne first introduced the legislation, which was passed by the Suffolk County Legislature. It became a statewide measure through bipartisan collaboration. Assemblyman DeStefano co-sponsored the bill in the Assembly while Senator Julia Salazar and Senator Dean Murray worked together to secure its passage in the Senate.

"This legislation is a great example of what we can achieve when we prioritize community safety and work across party lines," said DeStefano. "Providing first responders with the tools they need to save lives gives families across Suffolk County and beyond peace of mind, knowing they are better protected in emergencies. I'm proud to have played a role in expanding this critical safety measure."
