Javesh Persaud, a 34-year-old resident of Shirley, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for sex trafficking and related charges. The sentencing follows his guilty plea to luring a homeless woman to Suffolk County under false pretenses and forcing her into prostitution.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney commented on the case, stating, "This defendant took advantage of the victim who was in a vulnerable situation and subjected her to cruel and inhumane acts for his own personal gain." He added that the sentence serves as justice for the victim and as a warning against human trafficking in Suffolk County.

Court documents reveal that Persaud met his 18-year-old victim through Omegle, an online chat platform. At the time, she was homeless and living in New York City subways. Persaud offered her shelter and basic necessities but instead brought her to a parking lot in Shirley where he coerced her into prostitution.

The victim eventually sought help by contacting Polaris, the National Human Trafficking hotline. This led to intervention by the Suffolk County Police Department's Human Trafficking Investigations Unit and subsequent arrest of Persaud.

Persaud entered his guilty plea on October 25, 2024, before Acting Supreme Court Justice Karen M. Wilutis.
