Smithtown, NY - The Smithtown Fire Department will honor Lt. Percy Forman as the 2022 Grand Marshal of the annual Memorial Day Parade. Chief of Department Patrick Diecidue announced that this year marks the first time the department is hosting the event. An antique fire engine will lead the parade with fire gear aboard to symbolize Lt. Forman's presence, driven by former Chief Matthew B. Kondenar Jr., behind a banner displaying his name.
Lt. Percy Forman served in World War II as part of the United States Army Air Force, specifically in the 315th Squadron of the 324th Fighter Group. He was killed in action over Blickweiler, Germany on March 11, 1945. As a loyal member of Engine Co. 2, he has been remembered in various ways throughout Smithtown. Percy Street off Lawrence Ave is named after him and features a plaque commemorating his actions.
Inside the firehouse, an honor roll lists all 58 men who served from Smithtown during World War II, with a Gold Star next to Lt. Forman's name to signify his sacrifice for the nation. Each year since his passing, members of the Smithtown Fire Department have laid a wreath at their memorial site to honor fallen members.
This year's parade will be unique as it marks "the first time since his passing" that "the members of the Smithtown Fire Department will march along with him down the streets of his hometown."
