New York Times bestselling author and political commentator Eddie Glaude Jr. is set to participate in a Presidential Lecture at Stony Brook University on February 27. He will engage in a conversation with Carl Lejuez, the Executive Vice President and Provost of the university.
Eddie Glaude Jr., known for his latest book "We Are the Leaders We Have Been Looking For," holds the position of James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor and was formerly chair of the Department of African American Studies at Princeton University from 2009 to 2023. His work explores the intricate dynamics within American society, focusing on Black communities, racial issues, and democratic challenges.
During the lecture, Glaude will address questions from the audience while discussing anti-racism and its opposition to valuing certain people over others. He aims to highlight the importance of fostering environments where individuals can critically analyze societal issues.
His book "We Are the Leaders We Have Been Looking For" is based on lectures he delivered at Harvard University and emphasizes how ordinary Black Americans can move away from depending solely on professional politicians by engaging in self-cultivation and grassroots activism to achieve democracy.
Glaude's writing style aligns with that of American critics like James Baldwin and Ralph Waldo Emerson, as he examines history while revealing national complexities, vulnerabilities, and hope. In one notable Du Bois quote he favors: “not hopeless, but a bit unhopeful.”
The lecture will occur at 5 p.m. at Stony Brook University's Charles B. Wang Center Theater. It is free for public attendance; however, seating is limited. RSVPs are required online by February 13 for attendance or submitting questions. The event will conclude with a Q&A session followed by a book signing and reception.
