The New York State Senate Republican Conference has expressed its opposition to the potential reinstatement of a full MTA payroll tax as a solution for addressing the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's budget deficits. The conference is urging Governor Hochul and Democratic leaders in the state legislature to consider alternative measures that do not impose additional financial burdens on taxpayers and businesses.
According to the conference, the MTA should address its internal issues of mismanagement, fraud, and waste rather than relying on increased taxes or fees. They propose two key steps: conducting a forensic audit to reveal inefficiencies within the agency's finances, and establishing a Financial Control Board to enforce fiscal discipline.
The Republican Conference emphasizes that these measures are necessary to restore public trust and ensure efficient operations for millions of New Yorkers who depend on MTA services. "Enough is enough," stated NYS Senator Dean Murray from the 3rd District. He stressed the importance of identifying wasted resources through an audit before any additional funding is considered.
NYS Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick from the 9th District also voiced concerns about relying on a payroll tax increase as a solution. She highlighted the need for long-term reforms focusing on fiscal responsibility.
Senator Rob Rolison from the 39th District pointed out regional disparities in service expansion, particularly in Orange County, advocating against further taxing residents without improvements in services.
The Republican Conference maintains that solving MTA’s budget crisis should not come at the expense of small businesses and families already facing high living costs in New York.
