Cost of college went up for all students at Stony Brook University

In-state tuition and fees rose 4 percent for 2018-19 at Stony Brook University, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

New York residents paid $9,625 to attend the four-year public institution this year – $368 more than the $9,257 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 183.6 percent more than residents this year, or $27,295. Their price tag grew 2 percent from $26,767 in 2017-18.

About 77 percent of the school's undergraduate population are New York residents. About 8 percent are residents of other states and 14 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 78 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 2,234 students received grants or scholarships totaling $22.7 million and 1,338 students took out student loans totaling more than $8.5 million.

Including all undergraduates (26,256), 10,233 students used grants or scholarships totaling $96.3 million, and 6,602 students took out $40.5 million in federal student loans.
