The Suffolk County Police Department is continuing its effort to target drivers with improper or fraudulent license plates as it often means these individuals are involved in criminal activities and attempting to avoid law enforcement.
Earlier this month, SCPD partnered with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police and New York State Park Police and issued a combined 113 Uniformed Traffic Tickets, impounded eight vehicles for verification of ownership, seized 16 license plates, and arrested two people for Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument 3rd Degree and two people for Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument 2nd Degree during the first day of the weeklong crackdown.
During the remainder of the week, the SCPD arrested two more individuals for Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument 3rd Degree, seized 27 fraudulent license plates, impounded two vehicles and issued 197 Uniformed Traffic Tickets.
In addition to narcotics trafficking, obscured or fake license plates are often associated with insurance fraud and identity theft, stolen vehicles and avoiding red light camera summonses. These types of plates also make it difficult for witnesses of crashes and other crimes to properly identify those at fault.
