Suffolk County Police Department recruits decided to sweat for a good cause this month when they hosted an exercise fundraiser benefitting the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which honors FDNY Firefighter Stephen Siller, who died in the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Recruit class 21-182, which is comprised of 69 recruits and is set to graduate later this month, were joined by family, friends, and fellow members of law enforcement in a workout at Hauppauge High School earlier this month. The event raised more than $7,200 for the organization, which also honors United States military personnel and first responders who died serving their communities.
Community service is nothing new for SCPD recruits, who frequently accomplish a service-minded project while attending the Police Academy in Brentwood. In the past, recruits have raised money to bring food to staff at local hospitals during the COVID pandemic; help food drives to benefit Long Island Cares; conducted toy drives to donate to the United States Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots program, and worked with a local group called Jammin’ for the Community to make and distribute more than 15,000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to local students.
Good job to the future of the SCPD for starting their careers with philanthropy in mind!
