Three Marine Bureau officers and a good Samaritan’s quick actions saved a man who was ejected from his boat following a crash on Wednesday.
A Islip man was operating a 25-foot Grady-White boat when he is believed to have suffered a medical emergency and crashed his boat into the Fire Island Pines bulkhead, ejecting him from the vessel. A good Samaritan jumped into the water and kept the victim afloat until Marine Bureau Officers Joseph Riviello and Anton Fanelli arrived on Marine Juliette. The officers immediately jumped into the water and rendered First Aid to the victim. He was taken to Timber Point Marina before and then transported to Stony Brook University Hospital via a Suffolk County Police helicopter.
A third Marine Bureau officer, Richard Berni, jumped from Marine Kilo to the man's boat, which was now unoccupied and traveling in circles. Officer Berni was able to switch the boat into neutral.
Good job to the Marine Bureau officers who dove into action this week!
