Assemblyman Jarett Gandolfo (R,C-Sayville) announced the New York Conference of Italian American State Legislators' initiative to offer scholarships for the year 2024. The scholarships, totaling four in number with values of $3,000 each, comprise two academic and two athletic scholarships. Interested individuals, including current college students and high school seniors enrolling in college, can access the application process on the organization's website. The deadline for applications is set for Friday, March 15.
"I’m so glad we as the Conference of Italian American State Legislators are able to once again offer scholarship opportunities to students in New York," expressed Assemblyman Jarett Gandolfo, emphasizing the importance of higher education in the contemporary world. He further highlighted the challenges associated with rising college costs, stating, "College continues to be a paramount need for success in the 21st century, and as costs continue to rise, more students are at risk of being locked out of these important opportunities." Despite the broader issue of college affordability, Gandolfo expressed pride in the organization's ability to support more students in pursuing their educational goals, affirming, "We can’t solve the wider problem of college affordability right now, but I’m proud that we are in a position to help a few more get there."
Applicants for the scholarships are required to meet specific criteria, including a grade point average of 85 or higher, active involvement in community service and extracurricular activities, and demonstration of financial need. Moreover, applicants for athletic scholarships must also participate in organized sports. Notably, applicants need not be of Italian descent to apply. The recipients of the scholarships will be announced in April, followed by a ceremony in Albany to honor the winners.
