DeStefano, a vocal advocate for the protection of correctional officers, has joined the call to increase penalties for sexual offenses committed against these frontline workers. Expressing concern over the impact of certain legislative measures, DeStefano highlighted the challenges faced by correctional officers in the current system.

"Hearing the stories from women who have experienced worsening working conditions following the implementation of the HALT Solitary Confinement Act is yet another example of why pro-crime legislation is bad for New York. Our correctional officers are now forced to work alongside incarcerated individuals who know there are no consequences for their inexcusable actions. This is a losing situation for everyone involved. COs deserve better, they have a right to do their jobs without the threat of harm, just like everyone else in this state," DeStefano stated.

In response to these concerns, DeStefano welcomed bipartisan support for addressing the issue, citing the proposed bill A.1606 as a step towards creating stronger laws to protect correctional officers and prosecute those who abuse them.

"I’m pleased to see bipartisan support in addressing this major issue—bill A.1606 will create stronger laws that will better protect correctional officers and will help in the prosecution of those who abuse them," DeStefano remarked.

DeStefano's advocacy underscores the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of correctional officers in the face of escalating challenges within the criminal justice system.
