Suffolk County released data on May 6, 2024, related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have indicated that hospital admission rates and the percentage of COVID-19 deaths among all deaths are now the primary surveillance metrics.

In the week ending April 27, 2024, there were 52 new hospital admissions of confirmed COVID-19 patients. This represents a decrease of 17.5% from the previous week. The rate of hospital admissions per 100k in the past week was recorded at 1.8, indicating a low level of COVID-19 hospital admissions.

The daily hospitalization summary for Suffolk County on May 7, 2024, revealed that out of the total number of individuals hospitalized (29), approximately 62% were admitted due to COVID-19 or complications arising from it. There were eight new admissions and five discharges since the last report. Additionally, one patient was reported to be in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

However, it is important to note that hospitals are no longer reporting data to NYSDOH on weekends or holidays.

As for fatalities, since March 2020, there have been a total of 5,283 fatalities with no increase since the last report. The annual breakdown is as follows:

2020: 2,311

2021: 1,507

2022: 1,015

2023: 318

2024: To date -137

The COVID-19 case tracker for May 5, 2024 reported that there were 32 cases with an average of approximately three cases per day over a seven-day period.

As of September 1, 2023, positive results represent all positive tests reported to New York State including both first infections and reinfections.

The department offers COVID vaccines to uninsured and underinsured patients through New York State's Vaccines for Children program and Vaccines for Adults program, also known as the Bridge Access Program. Those with insurance that covers the COVID-19 vaccine are encouraged to receive their vaccines at their local pharmacies, health care providers offices, or local federally qualified health centers.
