Suffolk County released an update on COVID-19 statistics on May 10, 2024. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has stated that hospital admission rates and the percentage of COVID-19 deaths among all deaths are now the primary surveillance metrics.

The daily hospitalization summary for Suffolk County on May 10, 2024, indicated that 27 individuals were hospitalized, with 59% of these due to COVID-19 or complications arising from it. There were five new admissions since the last report, four discharges, and one patient in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). It should be noted that hospitals no longer report data to NYSDOH on weekends or holidays.

As of May 10, there have been a total of 5,284 fatalities since March 2020. This figure shows no increase from the previous report. The annual breakdown is as follows: 2,311 in 2020; 1,507 in 2021; 1,015 in 2022; 318 in 2023; and to date in 2024, there have been 138 fatalities.

The COVID-19 case tracker for May 10 reported a total of 404 cases. This equates to approximately 2.6 cases per every hundred thousand people and a seven-day average of around three cases per hundred thousand people. These figures include both PCR and antigen tests.

It's important to note that as of September 1, 2023, positive results represent all positive tests reported to New York State, including both first infections and reinfections. Prior to this date, reinfections were reported on a separate dashboard which has now been archived.

In terms of vaccination information and clinics offered by the department, uninsured and underinsured patients can receive COVID vaccines through New York State's Vaccines for Children program and Vaccines for Adults program - also known as the Bridge Access Program. Those with insurance that covers the COVID-19 vaccine are encouraged to receive their vaccines at local pharmacies, healthcare provider offices, or local federally qualified health centers.

The county also offers free COVID-19 tests and maintains a COVID-19 wastewater surveillance program.
