Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio and Senator Anthony Palumbo have announced the passage of legislation to rename the Halsey Manor Road overpass at the Long Island Expressway as the “NYPD Detective Brian P. Simonsen Memorial Bridge.” This dedication honors Detective Brian P. Simonsen, a 19-year NYPD veteran and Riverhead native who died in February 2019 while apprehending a perpetrator involved in an armed robbery.
Assemblywoman Giglio introduced the bill to rename the overpass as a tribute to Detective Simonsen's sacrifice and service. After deliberations in Albany, the proposal passed unanimously on June 7, 2024. The passage of Assembly Bill A.7123-A and Senate Bill S.7588-A aims to commemorate his dedication, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire and remind the community of his bravery.
“Detective Simonsen exemplified true courage and dedication in his time working with the NYPD. It was only fitting we honor his memory in a way that will be a lasting testament to his contributions to our community,” said Giglio. “This memorial will not only honor Detective Simonsen’s lasting legacy but also inspire future generations to appreciate the dedication and sacrifices of all law enforcement officials. I would like to thank my colleagues, including Senator Palumbo, for their support in this endeavor, and I am beyond ecstatic this legislation was passed.”
“Detective Brian P. Simonsen exemplified the highest standards of bravery and selflessness. His tragic death was a stark reminder of the dangers faced by our law enforcement officers every day. By renaming this bridge in his honor, we not only commemorate his heroic actions but also ensure his legacy lives on. The ‘NYPD Detective Brian P. Simonsen Memorial Bridge’ will stand as a permanent reminder of his dedication and sacrifice,” said Sen. Anthony Palumbo.
