After a weekend of coordination with first responders and officials in Westhampton Beach, New York, Representative Nick LaLota issued a statement regarding the recent brush fires in the Towns of Brookhaven and Southampton. The fires occurred on March 8th and 9th.

"Our First Responders showed incredible bravery battling the recent brush fires in Brookhaven and Southampton — now every level of government must meet that courage with action," said Rep. LaLota. He emphasized the need for federal and state governments to take preventive measures against such incidents, urging swift passage of the bipartisan Fix Our Forests Act by the U.S. Senate.

LaLota's statement highlighted that even if initial damage estimates fall short of federal disaster thresholds, it should not prevent action from policymakers. He called for more resources for controlled burns and forest clearing policies from the Governor to avert future large-scale fires. "Our First Responders fought to protect us — now we must fight to protect our communities, forests, and drinking water," he added.

The brush fires were exacerbated by high winds, injuring at least two firefighters and threatening the Long Island Pine Barrens nature preserve as well as Gabreski Airport. Members of the U.S. Air Force’s 106th Rescue Wing were actively involved in combating the blaze.

The Fix Our Forests Act aims to streamline National Environmental Policy Act regulations to reduce wildfire risk while improving forest management and ecological resilience. It also mandates a study on pine beetle outbreaks affecting Northeastern United States forests. This study will help develop targeted actions against these pests.

LaLota's amendment to this act was passed in September 2024, directing a comprehensive study on southern pine beetle threats to vital habitats and resources. The House approved this bill with LaLota's support on January 23, 2025.

The Pine Barrens play an essential role in preserving clean drinking water and supporting endangered species but have been significantly impacted by pine beetle infestations.
