The BeReadyLI Initiative, a collaboration between PSEG Long Island, United Way of Long Island, and 2-1-1 Long Island, aims to assist residents in preparing for disasters. The initiative provides guidance on how to protect families before, during, and after emergencies.

Resources such as the National Weather Service and National Hurricane Center offer updates on upcoming weather conditions. To locate nearby shelters, residents can text "SHELTER" and their zip code to #43362 (4FEMA) or visit the American Red Cross website at www.nyredcross.org.

For power outages or downed power lines, contact the PSEG Long Island Hotline at (800) 490-0075. For gas emergencies, National Grid offers 24-hour service at 800-490-0045 or by calling 911.

Information on road closures and transportation can be found on NY511's website. Additionally, MTA/LIRR updates are available online at www.mta.info.

Safety tips are accessible from various sources including the Red Cross Hurricane Safety Guide, New York State Aware Prepare Website, Suffolk County Emergency Preparedness Website, and Federal Government’s READY.GOV.

Families are advised to prepare disaster supplies kits containing essentials such as water, non-perishable food items, first aid supplies, clothing and bedding, tools and emergency supplies. Special attention should be given to pets with preparations including carriers/cages with toys, food and water supplies.

Evacuation planning information is available from the Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management. Families should ensure they have plans for contacting each other during an emergency and know how to turn off utilities in their homes.

Household preparedness checklists recommend stocking six basic categories: water; food; first aid supplies; clothing and bedding; tools and emergency supplies; special items for infants or elderly/disabled persons. Entertainment items like games and books may also be included.

Important family documents should be kept in a waterproof container along with inventory lists of valuable household goods. It is advisable to update stored supplies regularly every six months.

Emergency contacts include:

- Town of Smithtown Department of Public Safety: (631) 360-7553

- Town of Huntington Department of Public Safety - 24 Hour Emergency Hotline: (631) 351-3234

Shelter-in-place instructions emphasize selecting a small interior room without windows when hazardous materials are released into the atmosphere.

The initiative underscores that preparation is key to safety during disasters.
