Rep. Nick LaLota of Suffolk County voted in favor of the Full-Year Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act 2025, a measure designed to prevent a government shutdown by keeping federal operations funded through September 30, 2025. The act maintains fiscal year 2024 funding levels for essential programs and services.
LaLota expressed his commitment to bipartisan cooperation despite disappointment over the lack of support from House Democrats. "This week, I proudly voted to keep our government open, cut wasteful spending, protect Social Security and Medicare, and deliver the largest pay raise ever for junior enlisted troops," he stated. He emphasized his dedication to addressing issues such as inflation, border security, and securing SALT relief for middle-class families in Suffolk County.
The legislation fully funds the Department of Defense and increases general transfer authority from $6 billion to $8 billion. It includes the most significant pay raise for junior enlisted troops since the Reagan administration. Additionally, it supports new defense projects crucial for national security.
For veterans' healthcare and benefits, the act protects funding for medical services, pensions, housing programs, and allocates an additional $6 billion for the Toxic Exposures Fund.
Medicaid and Medicare provisions include delaying Medicaid Disproportionate Share Hospital cuts until April 1, 2025. Key Medicare programs are extended with adjustments made to the Medicare Improvement Fund.
Nutrition assistance is addressed by fully funding SNAP and WIC programs while increasing WIC funding by over $500 million.
Disaster relief measures continue support for FEMA’s Disaster Relief Fund with repurposed funds from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The National Flood Insurance Program is extended through fiscal year-end.
Homeland security receives full funding for Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), TSA operations along with Coast Guard personnel flexibility.
Public health initiatives extend community health center funding alongside critical medical research including NIH projects.
LaLota has been consistent in opposing government shutdowns while advocating legislative measures like the American Relief Act passed in December 2024 that kept federal operations running until March 14th this year or introducing bills like Troops Before Politicians Act mandating congressional pay suspension when servicemembers face similar situations during appropriations delays requiring Congress members remain working till resolution achieved exemplified through Prevent Government Shutdowns Act cosponsorship during previous congressional session aimed at ensuring timely completion of spending bills necessary avoiding potential disruptions governmental functions affecting citizens across nation alike those residing within Long Island region represented politically legislatively directly indirectly respectively thereby reaffirming constituents' interests priorities commitments undertaken elected official capacity fulfilling responsibilities entrusted upon him electorate served diligently faithfully without fail every opportunity presented circumstances arise necessitating intervention proactive stance matters concern collective welfare societal well-being broader context national governance landscape overall perspective
