The William Floyd High School girls' varsity tennis team has completed another successful season, securing a spot in the playoffs for the 22nd consecutive year. Under the guidance of head coach David Pia, the team achieved a 10-2 record in League IV play and a 14-2 record overall. This performance earned them a No. 4 seed, a first-round bye, and a second-round home playoff match scheduled for October 22 against either No. 13 Sachem or No. 20 Eastport-South Manor.
Coach Pia attributed their success to hard work over the summer: "All of the hard work over the summer got us off to a great start this year and has sustained us through the season." Michael Clauberg is serving as the assistant varsity tennis coach.
The team faced challenges, including an injury to number one singles player Anabel Van Cott since the fifth match of the season. Despite this setback, players like Lydia Van Cott, Khloe DiMaio, Trinity Lyons, and Madison Lockwood have stepped up their game in singles matches. The Colonials hope Anabel Van Cott will return for the playoffs.
The doubles team also contributed significantly to William Floyd's achievements this season with players such as Gianna Martin, Drew Wiegand, Olivia Phillips, Tatiana Sanchez, Corinne Neidig, Nadia Da Gama Paes, Rylie Wiegand, Brooklyn Barnes, and Renae Kelly showing continuous improvement.
In addition to their league success, several players received athletic honors. Lydia Van Cott, Gianna Martin, and Drew Wiegand earned All-County honors; Olivia Phillips and Tatiana Sanchez received All-Division accolades; while Nadia Da Gama Paes, Corinne Neidig, Rylie Wiegand and Trinity Lyons were awarded All-League honors.
Seven seniors were recognized during their Senior Game against Elwood/John Glenn which ended in a 6-1 victory. The honored seniors included Renae Kelly, Trinity Lyons, Brooklyn Barnes, Drew Wiegand, Nadia Da Gama Paes, Olivia Phillips and Madison Lockwood.
Additionally highlighted by Newsday earlier in the season were Anabel Van Cott and Lydia Van Cott as top 30 girls’ tennis players.
