Detrich Emanuel, a 31-year-old man, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison with an additional five years of post-release supervision for the fatal shooting of Kristine Costantino on New Year’s Eve in 2023. The sentencing follows his guilty plea to Manslaughter in the First Degree made in August 2024.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney commented on the case, stating, "Detrich Emanuel is a danger to the community in the truest sense of the word." He emphasized the importance of recognizing the impact violent crime has on communities and commended both law enforcement and prosecutors for their efforts in bringing Emanuel to justice.

Court documents reveal that on December 31, 2023, Emanuel was at Costantino's apartment in Middle Island with four others when a verbal altercation ensued between him and Costantino. During this confrontation, Emanuel shot Costantino after pointing a firearm at her chest. Although he called 911 following the incident, he fled before police arrived. Despite attempts to provide aid upon arrival, Costantino succumbed to her injuries at Stony Brook University Hospital.

Emanuel was apprehended on January 14, 2024, in the Bronx. His criminal history includes a prior conviction for Attempted Burglary in Queens County dating back to July 2018.

Supreme Court Justice John B. Collins handed down Emanuel's sentence on October 18, 2024. The defendant was represented by attorney Matthew Tuohy during legal proceedings.

Assistant District Attorney Sheetal Shetty from the Homicide Bureau prosecuted this case while Detective James Hughes led the investigation under Suffolk County Police Department’s Homicide Squad.
