The Renewable Energy/STEM Center at Suffolk County Community College has been recognized for its sustainable architecture by the 2024 Global Future Design Awards. The center, a 24,000-square-foot facility, is designed to maximize natural light and sustainability. It features photovoltaic panels on the roof, insulating berms, geothermal wells, and a central demonstration garden. These elements support its role as a teaching facility for renewable energy systems and sustainability principles.

The building's design adheres to Passivhaus standards with R-40 insulation and U-0.15 glazing to enhance thermal performance. Solar shades and daylight sensors reduce the need for artificial lighting. An energy-efficient Variable Refrigerant Flow HVAC system combined with a Ground Source Heat Pump ensures effective ventilation.

As a "net zero" energy building aiming for LEED Gold certification, the center focuses on indoor environmental quality while integrating both passive and active building systems. It serves as a living laboratory fostering innovation and collaboration among students preparing for future academic and career opportunities.

Suffolk County Community College is noted as the largest community college in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, enrolling over 21,000 students across more than 100 degree and certificate programs. With an alumni network exceeding 145,000 individuals, the college emphasizes meeting regional employer demands through comprehensive educational pathways from high school to careers.

AECOM, associated with this project, states: "At AECOM, we believe infrastructure creates opportunity for everyone – uplifting communities, improving access and sustaining our planet." The company remains committed to responsible business management focusing on reducing emissions and creating social value.
