The William Floyd Colonials boys’ varsity basketball team secured a victory against Longwood with a score of 66-57 in their first game since the passing of assistant Coach Darrell Sumpter. The win served as a tribute to "Coach D," whose memory was honored by both the team and the school community.

Before the game, members of the Sumpter family joined the team and coaches at mid-court for the national anthem. They were seated behind the William Floyd bench to express their support for the basketball program that held great significance for Darrell Sumpter and continues to be important to his family. Michael Feldstein, the public address announcer, read Coach D’s biography, followed by a moment of silence.

During the game, both teams exchanged leads until a late second-half surge gave William Floyd its largest lead at 54-40. Despite Longwood's comeback attempt, which narrowed the gap to three points, key plays by Jawuan Smith and Adam Gulsen helped secure the victory. This win improved William Floyd's overall record to 5-1 and maintained their perfect 3-0 record in League I play.

Jermaine King led with 33 points, setting a school record with eight three-pointers. Jawuan Smith contributed with a double-double performance of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Dahmarion Moses added eight rebounds and three blocks.

The Colonials have dedicated this season to Coach Sumpter's memory and aim to maintain their status as one of Suffolk County's top programs.

Funeral services for Darrell Sumpter will be held at Robertaccio Funeral Home in Center Moriches, NY on December 20th and 21st. The family will host a private crematory service instead of a burial.
