On October 29, a "zombie house" at 18 Overlook Drive in Mastic Beach was demolished by the Town of Brookhaven. Supervisor Dan Panico and Councilwoman Karen Dunne Kesnig were present for the demolition of the unfinished property, which had been constructed without proper permits. The house had become a neighborhood eyesore after suffering fire damage and being left incomplete.

Earlier this year, the town acquired the property with plans to maintain it as open space. As part of sustainability efforts, windows from the building were donated to Habitat for Humanity. Members of the demolition team from the Town’s Department of Recycling and Sustainable Materials Management joined Panico and Kesnig on-site.

The cleared land will be preserved to help protect and restore the marshland area for community and environmental benefit.

Residents can report blighted or abandoned properties by calling 631-451-TOWN (8696).
