William Floyd High School senior Zariel Macchia has achieved notable success in the field of cross-country running. She recently won the USATF Road 5K National Title, marking a significant accomplishment during the NYC Marathon weekend.

At the Suffolk Cross Country Championships and State Qualifiers at Sunken Meadow Park on November 6, Macchia secured her fourth consecutive Class A title with a time of 18:49.7 in the 5K race. This victory qualifies her for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Cross Country Championships, scheduled for November 16 at Queensbury High School in Queensbury, NY. She will also compete in the NY Federation Championships at Bowdoin Park in Wappinger Falls on November 23.

Macchia's performance extends beyond local competitions as she was named the USATF Athlete of the Week for winning her third consecutive USATF National Youth 5K championship during the NYC Marathon weekend. She clinched the girls’ title by eight seconds with a time of 17:27, matching her previous year's performance.

John Ryan, head coach of William Floyd's girls' cross-country team, expressed admiration for Macchia's achievements. He stated, “What an amazing kid – truly one of a kind. I cannot thank her enough for all the incredibly positive recognition that she has brought to the William Floyd School District." Ryan emphasized that Macchia's accomplishments have made both her and William Floyd household names among track and field enthusiasts across the United States.

Ryan further noted Macchia's accolades, including being a two-time Gatorade New York State Runner of the Year, as testament to her talent and dedication. He wished her continued success as she concludes her high school career and prepares to attend BYU next fall.
