Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) and Stony Brook Southampton Hospital (SBSH) have both received an 'A' grade for hospital safety for Fall 2024 from The Leapfrog Group. This nonprofit organization evaluates hospitals across the nation based on more than 30 performance measures related to errors, accidents, injuries, and infections.
“These ‘A’ grades from The Leapfrog Group validate our commitment to delivering the highest standard of safe, quality care,” stated William A. Wertheim, MD, executive vice president for Stony Brook Medicine. He emphasized that this recognition reflects the dedication of their healthcare team to provide exceptional care in a safe environment.
Carol Gomes, CEO of Stony Brook University Hospital, remarked on the significance of this achievement: “This top mark is a testament to the dedication of every Stony Brook professional to go above and beyond to protect patient safety.” She noted that earning an 'A' grade signifies that safety-focused healthcare is readily available in their community.
SBSH's consecutive 'A' grades place it among only 17 hospitals in New York State with such distinction for Spring and Fall 2024. Emily Mastaler, chief administrative officer at SBSH, expressed pride in this accomplishment: “We are honored to have again earned the nation’s top distinction for patient safety.”
Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, praised both hospitals: “Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade is a significant accomplishment... It reflects enormous dedication to your patients and their families.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is unique as it focuses solely on preventable medical errors and injuries. Updated twice annually, these ratings aim to inform the public about hospital safety standards.
