Martin Schoonen Associate Laboratory Director | Brookhaven National Laboratory
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory has announced the recipients of its 2024 Science & Technology Awards, recognizing significant contributions to the lab's science and technology objectives.
Michael Begel from the Physics Department is honored for his work in particle physics and detector technology, notably contributing to the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Begel pioneered the Global Feature Extractor (gFEX) for ATLAS Phase-I upgrade and contributed to developing the Front-End LInk eXchange (FELIX), which is now used in various experiments globally. His leadership also extends to mentoring young scientists, with three under his guidance receiving Early Career Awards from the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science.
Yoshitaka Hatta, also from the Physics Department, is recognized for advancing our understanding of proton structure through Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). His research has been crucial in linking QCD theory with experimental measurements at facilities like the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and Electron-Ion Collider.
Chang-Yong Nam from the Center for Functional Nanomaterials has made strides in materials synthesis and electronic device fabrication. His work focuses on energy-efficient computing and extreme ultraviolet lithography, securing funding through the U.S. Department of Energy's Accelerate Innovation program to further develop these technologies.
Edward ‘Ed’ O’Brien from the Physics Department has played a key role in nuclear physics research as a leader of major experiments at Brookhaven Lab's Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. He directed operations for PHENIX and led projects like sPHENIX, completing them on schedule and within budget.
Deepak Raparia from the Collider-Accelerator Department is noted for his expertise in accelerator physics, contributing significantly to ion beam accelerator development over three decades. His work supports multiple research programs at Brookhaven Lab and other national laboratories.
These awardees were among 359 staff members recognized during Brookhaven Lab’s 2024 Employee Awards and VIP Service Celebration held on November 13.
