Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School's third-grade students recently organized a ceremony to honor local veterans. The event was a culmination of efforts where students researched the six branches of the U.S. Armed Forces and wrote thank you letters to veterans. A "Woodhull Wall of Honor" project was also created, displaying photos of local veterans on an American flag backdrop.

The ceremony welcomed community veterans, including the school's chief custodian Mike Presseisen. School principal Dr. Heather Murillo opened the event, followed by "The Star-Spangled Banner" and a presentation of colors from William Floyd High School NJROTC cadets led by Senior Chief Andrew DiDonato. NJROTC member Thomas Colby was recognized for his future enlistment in the Navy.

Students led the Pledge of Allegiance and shared facts about Veterans Day. Third grader Alex Valenzuela expressed his nerves about speaking but felt inspired by veterans' bravery. Emma Hollywood shared her pride in thanking her father for his service.

A poem was read aloud by students to thank veterans for their sacrifices, followed by a performance of “This Land is Your Land” with music teachers John Sapanaro and Chris Miranda accompanying on piano and guitar. Veterans received applause as they stood at the end of the ceremony.

Ms. Kayla Schweers, third grade teacher and Community Cares Club advisor, played a key role in organizing this event, highlighting its importance in fostering community pride among students. "Our students have shown that service and gratitude go hand in hand," said Ms. Schweers.

Gratitude was extended to attending veterans Joe Stein (Army), Inesia Deschamps (Air Force), Chris Hollywood (Army), George Rodriguez (Marine Corps), Bob Roughton (Air Force), Rich Berni (Marine Corps), Jerry Perkins (Navy), and Kenneth White III (Marine Corps) for their service.
