Stony Brook University honors excellence at second annual Stony Awards

Stony Brook University recently recognized the achievements of its staff and faculty at the second annual Stony Awards on November 20, held at Flowerfield in St. James. The event honors individuals who excel in teaching, service, and fostering a sense of community.

Interim President Richard McCormick addressed the finalists: “To every Stony Award finalist in this room, your impact on Stony Brook University is exceptional.” He acknowledged their contributions to creating an inclusive environment: “I have witnessed employees across our complex institution working hard to ensure that Seawolves at every level feel valued and recognized for their integral contributions to this university.”

Among the award recipients was Rewa Thompson, honored with the President’s Award for Nurturing a Welcoming, Inclusive Campus Culture. Thompson's work focuses on women's healthcare and health equity. Dr. Poonamdeep Gill received the President’s Award for Excellence in Patient Service for her expertise in psychiatry.

The Excellence in Leadership Award went to Rick Gatteau and Marianna Savoca. Gatteau is noted for his role as Vice President for Student Affairs while Savoca leads career readiness initiatives. Tracey Walters was given the Community Award for her work in literature and cultural studies.

Surita Bhatia earned the SB YOU Award, recognized for her contributions as associate dean and professor of chemistry. The prestigious President’s Stony Brook Champion Award was presented to Rick Gatteau by McCormick.

A new accolade introduced this year was the Presidential Award for Extraordinary Service, awarded to Judith Greiman posthumously recognizing her dedication during her tenure at Stony Brook.

Blair Tate hosted the ceremony which also featured awards from the Office of the Provost and SUNY Chancellor recognizing various academic disciplines:

- Outstanding Mentor: Sandeep Mallipattu, James Pierre-Glaude

- Outstanding Lecturer: Kevin McDonnell, Sara Santos

- Distinguished Professors include Daniel Raleigh and Adam Singer among others

The ceremony concluded with acknowledgments across teaching excellence categories such as Excellence in Teaching awarded to Robin DeLuca-Acconi among others.
